When climate variability partly compensates for groundwater depletion: An analysis of the GRACE signal in Morocco

Morocco, Northwestern Africa. Since April 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission have opened new pathways for hydrologists to monitor changes in terrestrial total water storage (TWS). Here, Center Space Research (CSR), Goddard Flight (GSFC), Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), average (AVG) GRACE mascon solutions were used examine TWS groundwater storages (GWS) with an emphasis on natural replenishment events their link snow cover area (SCA) rainfall variability. The results showed that from AVG (TWSAVG) GSFC (TWSGSFC) can fairly describe temporal patterns of level (GWL). Moreover, during 2002–2020, underwent a strong depletion relatively masked by recharge events. This was revealed as we identified two intermittent episodes statistically significant rates (?1.03 ± 0.11 ?0.31 0.1 cm yr?1) higher than those obtained long-term trend lines (?0.28 ?0.15 0.07 yr?1). appeared be strongly linked SCA metrics indices 1–3 months lag. Our findings suggest distribution more insightful about levels compared monthly totals.
